I can't think of a better way of exploring astronomy. Unless of course we actually had a magic school bus;) Apologia Science is wonderful in the fact that the lessons are short yet full of information that all of my kids can understand. Having the kids narrate, design their own notebook pages and end each chapter with a fun experiment has really helped them to realize that the world and all of Heavenly Fathers Creations are perfectly in sync. Most importantly, there is a God who created all things. Here a some pictures we took when we studied the sun. The kids learned why it is so important not to look directly at the sun. When they realized that their eyes had a lense and the lense could focus the light of the sun on the back of their retina, and the sun could burn it without them even feeling it,they were amazed. They had to see for themselves how it worked. So we experimented with a magnifying glass and a leaf.
The leaf beginning to burn. They each had to have a turn. I was even surprised at how quickly the flames started. Once we focused the magnifying glass it didn't take to long, maybe a minute.
And it was only about 60 degrees outside when we did this last fall.
